Dr Tim Johnston

Tim is a composer of soundtracks and concert music. His creative output explores Anglo-Welsh traditional music, folkloristics, narrative, and modality.

Biography

I am a classically trained composer and music producer, based in south Wales. I have composed and produced multiple albums of my music, including soundtracks for several films (feature-length and shorts), and have credits on features as a post-production audio editor.

My research interests are in the use of traditional music and culture in contemporary classical repertoire. I am also a pianist, cellist, guitarist, and singer.

Teaching

Within my work and creative output as a composer, I am particularly interested in:

– The identity-forming process of compositional engagement with existing repertoire

– The interaction of Western art music with Anglo-Welsh folk music and culture

– Developing new methodological approaches to collaboration in music and visual media

– Music and narrative

– Creative studio techniques

At University of Gloucestershire, I am course leader for MD5361 Composing for Screen Media, for both the ‘Sound and Music Production’ and ‘Popular Music’ BA degrees, and module co-lead on MD7214 Music and Sound for Screen, Media and Games within the MSc ‘Sound and Music Production’ postgraduate programme.
