Biography

Stephen is a post-doctoral research fellow on the UKRI / MRC-funded project Sound, Environment and Ageing: Bringing the Outside into Care Homes (SAGE). He was awarded his PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London, in September 2023, where his researched focused on the way in which user-centred perspectives can inform the design, implementation, and analysis of sound for virtual experience. He also researches immersive audio, sound and music for interactive media, digital cultures, and accessibility in music education.

Stephen’s work has been published in the Journal of Sound and Music in Game, the British Journal of Music Education, and in collected editions published by Routledge and Intellect. He presents at conferences internationally, with recent talks given in Hong Kong, America, and across Europe. He also assists in the organisation of hybrid and virtual academic events, most recently including Ludomusicology 2022 and the AMS Ludomusicology Symposium.

Other recent projects include participation in the COST initiative ‘EarlyMuse’, which examines pan-European trends in higher music education, and collaboration with researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London on ‘Musicking in the Metaverse’, which develops understanding of how new streaming technologies and digital environments are altering the music performance industry for audiences and performers.
