Juliet Paterson

Lecturer in Sports Education

Juliet is employed as a lecturer in the School of Education and Science. Juliet teaches across the Physical Education and Sport Coaching programmes.

Biography

With over 20 years of experience in education, coaching, and research, Juliet has worked across a range of roles – from primary school teacher to university lecturer. She is currently a lecturer on the BSc PE and Sport Coaching programmes, where she supports future educators in becoming effective, reflective, and inclusive practitioners who are equipped to positively influence the lives of the children and communities they serve.

Juliet is currently completing a PhD exploring the use of democratic and participatory pedagogical approaches for centralising pupil voices in the design and delivery of primary physical education. Her work bridges research and practice to enable rights-based, inclusive and meaningful learning experiences for children. She has contributed to national CPD initiatives, conferences, and academic publications.

Teaching & Research

Teaching

As a lecturer, Juliet has led on modules on learning theory, pedagogy, outdoor education, research methods, and social justice, and has supervised student research. Her teaching experience has spanned Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes, including BEd Primary and PGCE Primary. She also regularly collaborates with schools to deliver CPD for teachers and PE leads.

Research

Juliet’s PhD research explores the potential of co-design, as pedagogy, for centralising children’s meaningful experiences in the design of primary Physical Education practice. She is interested in the use of participatory action research to work with children and the use of visual methods for improving understanding of pupils’ experiences of practice and more specifically the influence of co-design as pedagogy. She is supervised by Associate Professor Kass Gibson (PMU), Professor Déirdre Ní Chróinín (MIC).
