Ruth Hollier

Senior Lecturer in Primary Education

I lead the BEd (Hons) Primary Education with QTS course, am a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education and part of the Primary Maths Team.

Biography

I joined the Primary Education Team in 2013, having enjoyed a rewarding career in primary schools, first as a class teacher and then as senior leader and Deputy Headteacher. My focus now is Initial Teacher Education. My subject strength lies in primary maths, but I also lead on professional studies modules and I am the Course Leader for the BEd (Hons) Primary Education with QTS course.

I enjoy a really varied role at UoG and, as well as my day-to-day work, I am an Accredited Professional Development Lead for the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics, involved in extensive teacher development work for the GLOW Maths Hub.

With my colleagues in the UoG Primary Maths Team, I co-authored a chapter on promoting classroom talk to develop mathematical reasoning in our publication ‘Teaching the Primary Curriculum’. I also wrote a chapter on ‘Deciding What to Assess’ in our team publication ‘Introduction to Primary School Teaching’. I have been recognised as a University Teaching Fellow because of the wide range and impact of my work.

The best part of my job is working alongside students and helping them develop into confident professionals who share my enthusiasm for learning and teaching and who are well placed to make a great contribution to children’s learning and to developments in schools in the future.
