Dr Sabina Fiebig

My work explores the complex interplay of belonging and identity in the context of migration and contemporary society.

Biography

My work explores the complex interplay of belonging and identity in the context of migration and contemporary society. I am fascinated by how individuals negotiate their sense of self and connection in relation to place, culture, and social dynamics.

My work delves into the multifaceted nature of belonging, examining how it is shaped by individual experiences, social interactions, and broader socio-political forces.

I am particularly interested in the role of narrative and storytelling in shaping and expressing identities, and how these narratives can be used to foster understanding and bridge social divides.

Teaching & Research

Teaching

My teaching is deeply intertwined with my research, creating a dynamic exchange between theoretical understanding and real-world applications. My research on identity, belonging, and migration provides valuable insights into the dynamics of social divisions and inequalities, enriching my teaching on these critical issues.

My current work on AI and storytelling allows me to bring cutting-edge perspectives on the societal impact of digital technologies into the classroom, ensuring that my teaching remains relevant and engaging in our rapidly evolving digital age.

Research

Research Experience

– PhD Research: My PhD thesis investigated the experiences of migrants in the UK, focusing on how they navigate their sense of identity and belonging in a new cultural context. The study employed a combination of autoethnography, life-story interviews, and creative methods to capture the diverse and nuanced ways in which migrants construct their identities and find their place in a new society. This research highlighted the importance of personal narratives in understanding the complexities of belonging and the dynamic relationship between identity and migration.

– Patch-worx: Stories of Un/Belonging: This project uses participatory arts-based methods to explore notions of identity and belonging within a local community. The project aims to create a community artwork that reflects the diverse experiences and perspectives of participants, fostering dialogue and connection. Through this project, I aim to explore how creative expression can contribute to a sense of belonging and empower individuals to share their stories.

– AI and the Art of Local Storytelling: This project examines the potential of AI to enhance and diversify storytelling practices, with a focus on representing marginalised voices and bridging sociotechnical asymmetries. The research investigates how AI can be used to incorporate localised identities and multimodal narratives into storytelling, while also critically examining the challenges and limitations of AI in capturing the complexities of human experience.

Methodological Approaches

My research is grounded in qualitative and participatory methodologies, reflecting my belief in the power of personal narratives and the importance of collaborative research practices. I am drawn to innovative and creative approaches, such as arts-based methods and digital storytelling, which allow for richer and more nuanced explorations of identity and belonging.
