Ed Horley

Lecturer in Criminology

Former police sergeant and detective having specialised in the investigation of sexual offences and serious crime. Research interests include the history of and political development of policing, industrial relations within policing and the impact of trauma on staff.

Biography

I spent 8 years in the police, serving with both the Metropolitan Police Service and Thames Valley Police. During these years, I have worked in uniform and detective roles as both a constable and sergeant; serving in response and neighbourhood policing, as well as the CID.

I served in the Sapphire Unit investigating sexual offences and was trained as a Sexual Offences Liaison Officer prior to becoming a detective.

I teach on both the BSc Criminology and BSc Professional Policing degree courses.

I am particularly interested in how political activity intersects with policing practice, the development of policing in the UK within the wider political context and how this can impact officers on the ground.
