Teaching & Research

Teaching

Rowan leads and teaches on a range of modules on Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes delivered in Social Sciences. Her main areas of teaching and module leadership include: restorative justice and restorative practice, alternative justice forms, race and racism, social inequalities, criminological theories, concepts and ideas, qualitative research methods, criminal justice policy and practice, and imprisonment, punishment, and abolitionism.

Research

Rowan’s research focuses on responses to harm, in/justice, anti/racism, and the production of knowledge(s). By examining the production and exclusion of restorative justice knowledge(s) in criminology curricula within England and Wales, her PhD identified and evidenced the minimal and marginalised inclusion of restorative justice (and other alternative topics) in criminology curricula, the impact of such marginalisation on knowledge production, and the application of restorative pedagogy in undergraduate criminology teaching and learning. This research evidenced the influence of marketisation and neoliberalism on the academy and criminological and restorative justice knowledge production specifically.

Following completion of her PhD, Rowan is continuing to work on research which focuses on restorative pedagogy and restorative practice in organisational settings such as universities. Rowan is also involved in research concerning the development and application of restorative justice in criminal justice settings.

Alongside the research outlined above, Rowan is involved in ongoing collaborative research focused on decolonisation, anti-racism, and intersectionality, in the context of knowledge production, pedagogy and academic institutions. Her research in this area works to challenge the colonial and racist legacy of criminology as a discipline, examine barriers and opportunities to decolonise criminological knowledge production and universities more broadly, and encourage greater attention from academics, students, disciplines, and universities to the pursuit of anti-racism and intersectionality.
