Biography

I trained at Manchester Royal Infirmary School of Physiotherapy (University of Manchester) and graduated in 1989 (BSc Physiotherapy). My area of expertise is cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapy in primary and secondary care.

My interest in education began early in my career when I supervised students on clinical placement from the then School of Physiotherapy, Keele University. I was invited to join the programme development team as a Clinical Educator Representative and became a permanent member of staff in 2006. I have held a number of academic roles in the years since.

Teaching, learning, and curriculum development are my passion.

Teaching & Research

Teaching

My area of expertise is cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapy in primary and secondary care: early supported discharge; cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation; acute respiratory medicine; surgery and critical care. My teaching is evidence based and underpinned by basic science.

Research

The primary focus of my role is undergraduate and postgraduate education; my research interests are expressed through UG and PG research project supervision. Topics include physiotherapy management of the respiratory complications of neuromuscular disorders: cough augmentation; management of respiratory failure, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, clinical reasoning in physiotherapy and health literacy. My MSc thesis focused on exercise testing in patients with cardiovascular diseases. I am also interested in research in teaching and learning in higher education and curriculum development.
