Nadine Harding

Senior Lecturer in Policing

Academic Course Leader for BSc Professional Policing. Ex-Police Detective Sergeant with specialisms in all aspects of public protection and violence against women and girls. Research interests in wildlife crime and green criminology.

Biography

I spent nearly 17 years in the police in West Midlands and Gloucestershire. I have experience in response policing, CID, and as a detective working on serious and complex investigations around child abuse, sexual abuse and domestic abuse.

I have implemented the police component of a multiagency safeguarding hub. I have worked in risk management and co-ordinated multiagency safeguarding responses to support vulnerable people in our communities. I am now working in academia as the course leader for BSc Professional Policing (also known as the pre-join degree). The course is versatile and appeals to students wishing to pursue a career in policing or more broadly in criminal justice as well as those who have an interest in policing but who choose to go on to work in other sectors.

I am currently completing my PhD looking at trauma in wildlife rangers. I am research active and my work is mostly centred on wildlife crime, green criminology, public protection and broader issues in policing.

Teaching & Research

Teaching

I currently teach public protection for policing, personal and professional development, investigative practice and critical incident management. I also do some sessions for paramedic science on safeguarding.

I like to bring reality into the classroom for students and work hard to provide students with support from practitioners and opportunities to practise their skills. I have fantastic guest speakers with lived experiences who support my teaching on the course.

I work in partnership with Gloucestershire Constabulary on the Professional Policing degree.

Research

My research is focused on wildlife crime and green criminology as well as public protection. I have been completing research in to the policing of wildlife crime and the prosecution of wildlife crime funded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) over the last 18 months. The first report from this was published by IFAW in May 2023. In particular I am interested in the links between animal abuse and human violence and have recently completed a book chapter which is due to be published in December 2023.
