Special Interest
Last updated: 5 June 2024
From body positivity to Warhammer to e-sport to Kpop and more, UoG covers a very wide range of interests and remember: if you can’t find something you’re interested in, you can set up your own society. There is bound to be people that would like to join!
Here are just some of the clubs and societies on offer to our students – check out the SU website for the full list, ways to join and how to start your own.
- Anime: “Open to lovers of all genres, new and long-time fans are welcome. This is a relaxed society where we can have fun and express our interests. Every week, we’ll be viewing a variety of anime together, including Ghibli movies, ongoing series like Attack on Titan, and less popular series, and then discussing it. This society is also welcome to manga lovers and we’ll be looking at mangas too. ”
- Disney: “We are a society based on sharing our passion and love for all things Disney, which includes Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and classic Disney. Anyone is welcome to join no matter where you fall on the Disney scale; we welcome experts on all things Disney to people that have no clue. This society wants to bring people together to share ideas and opinions and to just have fun, so don’t be afraid to come to a session and see if you enjoy it. Our main event of the year is Disney murder mystery night. Come along dressed as you favourite Disney character and solve the mystery of “who killed Micky mouse”.
- E-Sports: “Our society aims to provide a fun yet competitive atmosphere for fans of the E-Sports. If you want to meet more gamers, compete in tournaments or just have a bit of fun then you are more than welcome at the E-Sports society. We aim to be the first at sending a team from this university to the NUEL – a university E-Sports tournament being held annually. If you feel like this is for you, then join us and get in touch!
Don’t worry if you haven’t played many games before; if you wish to start playing and improve from the ground up, then this is the place for you. We plan to host a variety of events – including in-house tournaments and more laid-back gaming sessions, alongside socials.” - K-pop: “We are a society dedicated to all things K-pop related! Our sessions consist of dance lessons, learning key Korean phrases and vocabulary beneficial if you ever find yourself wanting to or already are travelling in South Korea, socials both on campus and in town, and the occasional night in watching K-dramas or Korean movies. We have a range of interests at the society, with girl group, boy group, and soloist fans as well as co-ed enthusiasts, K-drama and movie fans, and many more! This gives you an open space to make friends who have the same interests.”
- Nintendo: “Join a friendly and welcoming society to play Nintendo games with friends and meet new people for casual gaming meetups. Don’t worry if you don’t own your own consoles, we have loads set up every week for you to come and try! We have plenty of games for Nintendo Switch, WiiU, 3DS, Wii, GameCube and N64 but feel free to bring along any game to play and share with others.
We will also be running lots of gaming tournaments for those who wish to take part, where members will be able to compete just for fun but also to win prizes. This includes some charity tournaments so keep an eye out for announcements.” - Table Top: “From the casual gamer, to the serious role-player; our society embraces all the fun of getting together with some friends, making new ones and maybe even getting a little competitive. We offer a wide array of board games, card games, dice games and roleplaying games. We are happy to both learn new games and to teach players of any skill level. All our board games are free to play here at the university, we offer snacks and drinks to accompany the game sessions and we offer fun events, such as our much anticipated ‘jazz age jeopardy’, (which is basically a real-life Cluedo game).
For our aspiring adventurers and dungeon masters, we will be running character building sessions for anyone interested in trying DnD regardless of previous experience. For anyone looking for a group to play with this year, come find your fellow adventurers at our society!” - Warhammer: “At the UoG Warhammer society we meet up weekly to paint and build miniatures and do a table top battle with our mighty armies. We take photos of each battle, and a Ministorum scribe details the conflict across the galaxy on our Facebook page.”
