Studying to become a teacher after completing an undergraduate degree

Postgraduate routes such as the postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) allow graduates to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS).

Tuition Fees

If you are on a PGCE course you will have to pay tuition fees. Tuition fees for 2021/22 are currently £9,250 for Home students and £14,700 for Overseas Students.

Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan

Home students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan to cover the cost of tuition fees charged. This loan is available through Student Finance England. Full details can be found on the Gov.uk website.

Training Bursaries

Bursaries are available for trainees on eligible postgraduate courses in England who are not employed as a teacher. Bursary amounts will vary depending on teaching subject and degree class. Students undertaking a School Direct Salaried course are not eligible for these training bursaries.

Application

Bursary payments are processed automatically for eligible candidates by the University, but you will need to complete a declaration form before the training bursary can be paid. This will be emailed to you in early September 2021. Students will also be required to submit their bank details via ‘Your
Student Record’, accessible via MyGlos to facilitate payments to be made by BACS.

Payment schedules

Full-time students

Trainees will receive the bursary in equal monthly instalments from October 2021 to July 2022.

Part-time students

Trainees will receive equal monthly instalments for the duration of their course, excluding the summer period. The payment plan can be amended if necessary, students will need to discuss this with the Student Funding Office by emailing [email protected]

All trainees must be in attendance on the course on the first day of the month in order to receive the bursary for that month. Funds should reach bank accounts on the fifth working day of the month.

Scholarships

If you’re passionate about your subject and have the potential to be an inspirational teacher you could apply for a scholarship to support your training. Scholarships are awarded to the most gifted trainees in chemistry, computing, maths and physics in partnership with highly regarded professional subject associations.

• A scholarship award replaces a trainee’s bursary eligibility.
• If you’re not successful in your application for a scholarship, and secure a place on a qualifying teacher training course in England, you’ll still receive the standard bursary.
• Scholarship payments are made in the same way as the normal bursaries and paid by the university, so trainees in receipt of a scholarship should let the university know by emailing [email protected]
