Lodgings Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated: 14 January 2021

What are Lodgings? Lodgings are where you share with the owner of the property. This could be another student, a family, a couple or a single person.

Is Lodgings suitable for me? Lodgings give students flexibility. There is no legal tenancy agreement. This is beneficial to students who only come to study for part of the academic year. Lodgings are often quieter than other types of student accommodation so they can be more conducive to quiet study.

How much does it cost? You can expect to pay approximately £70 per week for Lodgings where you self-cater. If you chose Lodgings on a half-board basis where the landlord/lady cooks your breakfast and evening meal then you can expect to pay approximately £90 per week.

Electric and gas should be included in the rent. You will probably have to pay extra for the use of the telephone.

Most landlords/ladies will ask for a deposit. This can be between one week and one month’s rent. You will also be expected to give reasonable notice, up to one month, if you wish to move out.

What facilities can I use? You should have your own study bedroom. Some rooms are suitable for couples or small families. You should also be able to use the kitchen facilities. You may have use of a shed, garage or driveway.

What are the criteria for Registering Lodgings with the University? Each student should have their own study bedroom. Each bedroom should be furnished with a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, chest of drawers and shelving.

It is a legal requirement for landlords/ladies to have a valid gas certificate. You can ask your landlord/lady to show you a copy of this certificate. Gas boilers or gas fires are not acceptable in study bedrooms.

NB: Lodgings are not inspected by the University Accommodation Office. If you are unhappy with the condition of the property then please inform us straightaway.

How do I find suitable Lodgings?

1. Select the location you want to live in. You may want to be near to the campus you are studying at or near the town centre. The University has a free bus service which operates regularly between each of the campuses and Cheltenham and Gloucester town centres.

2. Select what type of accommodation you wish to live in. Be aware that some of the Lodgings will have pets. We have used some abbreviations: S/C = self-catering, you cook your own meals H/B = half-board, the landlord/lady cooks your breakfast & evening meal N/S = non-smoking accommodation

3. Telephone the landlord/lady to arrange to view the accommodation. If you are unable to make the appointment please telephone to cancel.

4. Discuss the rent, deposit, retainers and house rules before accepting the room. Obtain a receipt for any payments you make.

5. Please contact the Accommodation Office to inform us that you have accepted a room from our Lodgings register.
