Benefits of living in halls

Last updated: 21 March 2025

Why live in halls?

There are lots of benefits to living in university-managed halls of residence:

Save money

Contract length: You will have a 40-week contract*, so you only pay rent for the academic year. Private housing contract lengths can be much longer so it’s worth comparing overall cost as halls might work out cheaper.

It’s not just for your first year. We provide an exclusive offer for returning students so you can stay in halls each academic year*.

Only a £200 advance rent payment* is required to secure your room which is fully returned during the academic year. No further payments are required until your first rent instalment in October 2025.

Free room cancellation by Friday 29 August 2025*, so if you change your mind just confirm in writing to [email protected] and we will cancel your room contract and refund the advance rent of £200 (if paid). Please note that if you sign a contract with other providers, you would be committed unless a replacement is found.

It’s hassle-free

All bills are included to make things as easy as possible for you. This includes heating, water and electricity – no caps, no limits! Fast, unlimited internet access is also included plus contents insurance. You’ll even get free gym access for students living at Pittville Student Village.

It’s hassle free! No need to look for housing, find housemates or contact landlords. Simply apply via our Applying for halls page.

No guarantors are required unlike some external houses and halls of residence*.

Make friends for life

You can choose to live in halls with a specific group, creating a household within halls!* If you have other friends coming to UoG that you want to live with, simply state the names of all applicants in the ‘Special Requirements’ box during the application process. We will then allocate you together provided you apply for accommodation around the same time.

Halls creates an amazing community and way to meet people. Halls of residence features so many people including new and returning students. It is a great way to meet students from across the country and the world!

It’s flexible

You have a choice of rooms across our portfolio so you can choose where you want to be based*. This includes en-suite rooms (which are extremely rare in private housing). Studio rooms are also available at Pittville Student Village. Rooms are allocated in the order we receive your application. Therefore, we recommend you apply as soon as you are able.

Halls transfers*: We offer halls transfers across of portfolio during term-time so you have the opportunity to move to a new flat, block or complex if you’d like, subject to availability.

Be supported

24-hour security. You will be in a safe and secure environment covered by our on-call security provision*.

Residential support: Welfare support is offered throughout your stay by your Residential Support Adviser who specifically works within halls of residence to assist you*.

You can find further details about the above along with lots of other useful information on our Halls of residence FAQs page.

*Please note that the above benefits will differ if you apply for Blackfriars or Upper Quay Halls of Residence. This is due to these Halls being managed entirely separately to the University by external companies; Aspire Student Living Gloucester Limited for Blackfriars and Collegiate for Upper Quay. Therefore, your halls contract will be directly with them and not the University.
