Award-winning research

Last updated: 15 May 2024

We’ve been awarded a UK Green Gown Award for Research with Impact (2019). Presented to Professor Adam Hart and Professor Anne Goodenough for their work to develop low-cost thermal imaging solutions to reduce rhino poaching.

Illegal hunting is a global threat to wildlife and anti-poaching initiatives are making increasing use of technology, such as thermal imaging. Their research was praised for its impact on conservation as well the wider benefits for ranger safety, stronger governance, partnership working and professional training.

“Coming to the reserve in my second year, and hearing their struggles with poaching I knew I had to do something. I asked what I could do and found the position I hold now. Whilst I was out there in 2018 after graduating, I found out about a research opportunity and grabbed it with both hands, meaning I can do both at the same time! Don’t ever be afraid to take a step into the unknown, you never know where it might take you.”
