The county’s namesake pig – The Gloucestershire Old Spot – is distinguishable by its broad, deep body, lop ears and of course, its spots. It must have at least one spot of black hair on a patch of black skin to be classified as a Gloucestershire Old Spot.

Often kept in orchards, legend has it that the spots found on this pig breed are bruises caused by falling apples.

They’re gentle in nature, known to have great maternal instincts and reputed as excellent foragers.
