Media & Arts

Last updated: 5 June 2024

Whether you want to put on a show, discuss the latest releases, or run our very own radio station, media and arts societies will develop your creative talent. They also help you open doors to industry contacts, take a fresh approach to your work and even access VIP events.

Here are just some of the clubs and societies on offer to our students – check out the SU website for the full list, ways to join and how to start your own.

Students in Television studio
  • TV Society: “The TV society is all about getting together as a team and filming/streaming events around the university, whether it’s for the SU, course-related activity or a local event. You don’t have to be a TV or film student, just passionate about working together to create something great.”
  • DJ Society: “Our aim is to create a family for all who love music, nights out and DJ-ing. Whether you’re a student who has always had an interest in becoming a DJ, producer, singer, MC or just someone who wants to be with a group of people who are really into their music, then we are the right society for you. Our goal is to spearhead Cheltenham’s nightlife with some of our artists who play excellent music from a variety of genres. We facilitate DJ lessons or studio time, for those of you who are more experienced, in Pirate Studios using industry-standard DJ decks and equipment that you would expect to be using when we get you performing.”
  • UniVersal News: “UniVersal is the University of Gloucestershire’s student newspaper. We publish content from all genres – news, sport, entertainment, opinion and more – with a student focus, covering all five campuses. Anyone is welcome to join regardless of course or writing ability.”

  • Drama Society: “You can expect sessions to not only include enacting scenes, monologues or dialogues, vocal and body warm-ups, improvisations and mime, but also many fun activities. We also encourage our members to attempt script-writing. In the past, we performed plays written by our own members. We aim to put on at least two performances a year, a Christmas and Summer production. No prior drama experience is needed – you’re welcome regardless if you’re passionate about the field, looking to try something new or simply wanting to make new friends.”
  • Performing Arts: “We work across all core theatre disciplines: drama, dance, and singing. Our fantastic teachers are all experienced in their areas, so feel free to ask them questions as you go. Our weekly classes cover things like ballet, jazz, drama, singing, musical theatre and flexibility. We also run one-off sessions with industry professionals on more specific areas, so if you have a request, let us know. Our classes are for everyone, so whether you’ve been performing for years or are looking for your first lesson, we can’t wait for you to join us.”
  • Tone Radio: “Tone Radio is the official radio station of the University of Gloucestershire. We host our own events throughout the year and get exclusive VIP and press access to festivals across Gloucestershire – all while running our three-time Student Radio Award nominated station. We’re open to students from across the university, regardless of skill or previous experience.

If presenting doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, remember that radio is far more than just who’s on the microphone. Whether you want to try presenting, producing, news-reading or written journalism or sports commentary, we can find a place for you here. You could provide technical help to newbies, manage our website or social media, help design graphics and show logos, edit visual content (yes, radio can have pictures!), help organise and market our events (including Glos-Tone-Beret, our annual tongue-in-cheek French-themed fundraiser) and much more.”

  • The Film Society: “Here at the Film Society we screen a feature film every single week. We’ll screen a huge mix of films: classic and contemporary, English and foreign language, cult hits and hidden arthouse gems, live-action and animated. After each screening, we’ll meet-up during the same week and have a group discussion about the film screened, where everyone will have an equal place to voice their thoughts, opinions or analysis, whether positive or critical. There’s no obligation to speak at discussions, if you’d rather just come and listen, that’s fine!”
  • Farid The Zine: “Farid the Zine is curated purely by young creatives with a new & fresh take on lifestyle & culture journalism. Showcasing work produced by the young creative minds of our generation – with contributors from all over the UK – FARID will be your vessel on the latest in today’s youth culture. Think original video content, exclusive photography, reviews, opinion pieces and an all-over enjoyable experience – faridzine.com covers pop culture as it happens. This zine is a product of curiosity – we are students, we are broke, we are bored and we want to do something new. So… why not channel that into something beautiful, where we can all share our thoughts.”
