Applying for a Student route visa inside the UK

Last updated: 11 March 2025

Step 1: Request a CAS

If you are applying for a new course of study at the University, you will have been instructed to request a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) as part of the admissions process. For further information please visit our Requesting a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) webpage.

Please note, your CAS, once generated, will be retained by International Student Services, ready for use at your one-to-one appointment. You will receive a copy of your CAS once your visa application has been submitted.

Step 2: Prepare your supporting documents

The supporting documents that you will be required to prepare will vary according to your specific circumstances. For further information, including a list of documents ordinarily required, please refer to the relevant section of our Applying for a Student visa from inside the UK – FAQs.

Step 3: Attend a one-to-one appointment with International Student Services

Once your CAS request and all required documents have been submitted to International Student Services, a member of the team will contact you to schedule a one-to-one Microsoft Teams appointment for submission of your visa application. At this appointment, a member of the team will:

Step 4: Attend your biometric appointment at a UKVCAS service point (if required)

If you have not been able to use the integrated ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app, you will need to attend a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point to register your biometric information (fingerprints and iris scan). Appointments are normally chargeable (prices start from £132), but most service points also offer a limited number of free appointments. The nearest service point to the University is in Bristol.

Step 5: Receive decision from UKVI

If your application is successful, you will receive an email from UKVI advising of your new immigration permission.

Unsuccessful applications are rare, but in the event your application is refused, you will receive an email explaining the reasons for refusal and outlining your right to an administrative review of the decision.
