Graduate Internship employer FAQ

Last updated: 31 March 2025

What is a graduate internship?

Graduate internships provide a valuable opportunity for employers to bring in fresh talent and innovative ideas while helping to develop the next generation of professionals. These internships are typically aimed at individuals who have recently completed their academic studies and are looking to gain practical experience.

How long is the internship and how many hours per week will be expected?

This will be a part-time opportunity, with an expectation of 22 hours per week for 4 weeks. In total, each graduate will work 88 hours.

What dates will the internship be expected to take place?

The internship will run from 18 August – 19 September 2025. There is an extra week to cover any illness or potential issues in completing the 88 hours.

How is the internship funded?

The university will be funding the internships. Any additional hours worked, training, travel (bar a fair commute) or extra systems will have to be paid by the business.

Will the work need to be on site, virtual or hybrid?

We are open to opportunities that are on site, as well as those that are completely virtual or hybrid. However, please take into consideration how you will best support your intern if these opportunities are completely virtual or adapt a more hybrid role. Our graduates are not all based in one area and may not stay in Gloucestershire so please bear this in mind and be open to flexibility where possible.

I have a specific skill set required for my potential project can I specify this?

Yes, we are open to hearing about both general projects and those that may require a specific skill set and we will give this consideration when matching you with an appropriate graduate.

We ask you to be mindful of your capacity to offer support to the graduate during their project, as the internship experience should incorporate guidance to enable the graduate to develop themselves and their professional skills.

Will the graduate intern receive training?

Before the internship commences, each graduate will receive tailored career support from the Student Futures Team, to ensure they are equipped with the skills and confidence needed for a successful internship experience.

What is expected of me as an internship provider?

The purpose of these internships is to support our graduates who are not currently employed to gain valuable work experience and develop professional skills that will help them with obtaining future work.

With that in mind, we ask that you ensure you have capacity to appropriately support your graduate intern to develop in this way and to make the internship of valuable experience for them. While we would love it if you officially recruited our graduate into a role after the internship – this is not expected.

To ensure both the employer and the intern are happy with the match, we ask that a meeting be arranged before the start of the internship. This meeting will allow both parties to discuss the project/role in detail and confirm that everyone is aligned with the expectations and responsibilities. This helps ensure a positive and productive experience for both sides.

What kinds of organisations are you looking for?

We are open to working with organisations across all sectors and of all sizes (individual freelancers included). Our priority is ensuring that the graduate will have a positive experience that allows them to develop and gain meaningful experience in a supportive environment.

How do I know if my opportunity is appropriate?

If you have a project that a graduate intern could complete over a four-week period, and capacity to support them in that project to develop their professional skills then we would love to hear from you to discuss further.

If I’m interested what are the next steps?

For an initial conversation please contact the student futures team at [email protected] to discuss your opportunity and if it would be a suitable fit.

You are not limited to just one internship.

We will then ask you to submit details of your project/ opportunity and will be in touch to let you know if we have found a suitable graduate.
