You’ll gain practical skills essential for working on sound and music projects across a wide range of industries. The course covers everything from composition and sound design for film, television, and games, to immersive and spatial sound for music production and VR/XR environments. You’ll also explore live sound engineering and event technology, studio and location recording, and electronic music production – all with a strong focus on innovation in music technology.
Graduates work across the sound and audio industry, engaging with cutting-edge technologies and employment-focused roles. With a 100% graduate success rate, they have secured positions as sound engineers at major UK festivals, delivered sound design and music production for corporate clients, taken on roles as theatre and sound technicians in West End and touring productions, and have careers as post-production mixers and composers for TV and film.
You’ll learn through a combination of practical sessions, lectures, group work, and professional experiences, with all assessment based on coursework. Teaching takes place in industry-standard recording studios, production labs, interactive platforms, and with access to specialist software and hardware.

You’ll also have access to rehearsal spaces, fabrication labs, radio and podcast studios, and a host of audio facilities across the university.
Throughout the course, you’ll gain hands-on experience using these facilities, build expertise in live sound engineering for venues ranging from small spaces to festival stages and live streaming, and collaborate with students from other creative disciplines. These could include songwriters, performers, filmmakers, animators, and games designers to produce music and sound for a wide variety of audio and screen media projects.

English Language or Literature and Maths Grade 4/C in GCSE (or equivalent) are normally required.
We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants, although some entry requirements may still apply for Professionally Accredited Courses. We accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas and make offers on an individual basis.

Our teaching team all continue to work regularly in the industry, composing for film, releasing critically-acclaimed music, alongside developing sound and music research that’s recognised throughout the international academic community.
Studio 1 can run all the tools in a Producer’s toolkit – Logic, Pro Tools & Ableton and is equipped with an SSL XL analogue desk and Unity stereo monitors. Studio 2 was designed and installed by ‘Studio People’ who’ve built studios for the BBC, EMI, Hospital Records, Heart FM and Games Workshop to name a few. It’s equipped with an Avid S6 desk and runs Pro Tools Ultimate for stereo and 5.1 mixing.
Our dubbing theatre is equipped with a Dolby ATMOS 7.1.4 system running Pro Tools and LOGIC for industry-standard immersive audio mixing for film, television or animation. It’s also fast becoming the additional format for music mixing as spatial audio reaches wider markets.
The Sound Lab offers a unique 22.2 Immersive sound array featuring the latest spatial sound software. Experiment with sound to light and visual mediums and developing the potential of immersive audio experiences.

Explore the evolving world of spatial audio with facilities including a 22.2 sound array, a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos suite, a mobile 12.1 system, and an expansive range of microphones and software designed to support this cutting-edge medium.
You’ll benefit from access to our established Spatial Audio Conference, which attracts participants from across the UK and around the globe. Staff are actively engaged in research, with funded projects investigating the innovative applications of immersive audio.
