Will Weaving is a recent graduate of UoG’s Geography BSc.
During the Geography programme at University of Gloucestershire, I unearthed my passion for rivers, fluvial geomorphology, river restoration, freshwater ecosystem ecology, and environmental quality testing. The course’s tailored design enabled me to delve into my interests deeply, complemented by extensive practical field trips and laboratory work that provided hands-on industry exposure.
The department’s commitment to experiential learning and variety of volunteering initiatives was perfect for me. I volunteered in Stroud (Gloucestershire), where I gained valuable insights into Natural Flood Management strategies using a real-life catchment case study where I collected data to assist with river monitoring.
I now work as a Water Scientist within a world leading firm, where I apply the skills gained at University of Gloucestershire to a diverse range of projects nationwide, engaging with legislative assessments such as Water Framework Directive and Nutrient Neutrality, as well as leading on the production of Environmental Impact Assessments, water quality monitoring programmes, and projects concerning fluvial geomorphology, river ecology, GIS and data analytics. The expertise, opportunities, and dedication to teaching and learning within the geography department is unlike any other teaching experience I have encountered. The geography programme at UoG helped transform my passions into a fulfilling everyday work reality.
