Sites visits made me excited for a career in design

Ayla Yan is a student on UoG’s BA Architecture degree course.

“I found applying to university very stressful, however, I knew UoG was the place for me, after an open event where I saw the beautiful studio that I would be studying in. I could see myself designing in that space.

Coming to UoG was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I now have lectures and tutorials in the design studio that attracted me to the university. I have made amazing friends on the course and from living in halls during my first year, I made friendships that I hope will last a lifetime.

“The course is challenging but in an exciting way. I have gained so many new skills and learnt software that I can use as a working professional. At first, these things seemed daunting, however the friendly lecturers taught these skills at a gradual pace, allowing for those who learn at different rates to succeed. Drawings I found difficult during my first year, I am now able to complete with ease and enjoy doing.

“What I looked forward to studying most within architecture at UoG were the site visits to active construction sites. Recently, I had the opportunity to see the university’s new city campus while it was being built. This consolidated recent learning on materials and construction techniques and made me excited for a career in design. I had an amazing time and this experience is one I will never forget.

“Something that sets the architecture department at UoG apart from other universities are the diverse lecturers who all practise architecture, research or design. This wealth of knowledge fosters learning. They are supported by guest lecturers that broaden your thinking, delivering lectures on subjects such as acoustics, embodied carbon and climate change. These subjects are just a few of the topics I now have a deeper understanding of.

These opportunities, the skills I have learnt and the friends I have made are just some of the reasons studying at UoG was genuinely one of the best decisions I have made.”
