Chaya Caullychurn is undertaking a placement as a vascular science practitioner at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
“The role involves seeing patients who have a wide range of vascular-related issues and performing scans, as well as researching different aspects of vascular issues to expand on our knowledge and skills as a practitioner.
“I enjoy meeting different people as they come in for their scans and knowing I am having a positive impact on the patient, and that I am contributing towards someone’s health and positive wellbeing.
“I was initially completing a BSc in Biomedical Science at Oxford Brookes University but after my first year I was very disheartened at the reality of the job as a biomedical scientist, as I really enjoy having that face-to-face interaction with a patient. I always wanted to be a scientist, hence choosing to study Biomedical Science, however, when I wanted to change to another course, I looked at different scientist courses and came across this course which I found very interesting after researching the role of vascular scientist. I applied as a direct entry student, and I am going into my second year of study.
“My biggest achievement of this year is settling into my placement and gaining the confidence with the basic techniques for the first-year scans.”
