I have learned more about myself as a professional and as a researcher

Barbara Neale, PhD student at the University of Gloucestershire.

“I chose to study with University of Gloucestershire for several reasons: I have completed education in the past at the University which was a very positive experience.  The University has a good reputation of postgraduate programmes and supporting students. It was in the county I lived so it is accessible and practical. The support I have received during initial discussions was encouraging, approachable, and supportive in helping me to build my confidence and realise my ideas were conducive to research activity.

My research activity was driven from a wealth of practice history and unanswered questions that continued to arise for me that I considered worthy of some greater attention.  The opportunity to read and research around the subject area has been an incredible experience. My primary study also allowed me to understand processes, ethical principles and ultimately meet some wonderful people who have supported the development of insight into the subject area.  I have received excellent supervision. I have been encouraged, guided, informed, and challenged to ensure I am developing my knowledge and ability to write academically and adopt different styles according to the audience I am preparing to communicate with.

I have learned more about myself as a professional and as a researcher. Engaging in this level of study has allowed me to continually develop and reflect on my knowledge and understanding that is shaping my research. Within my reflections I have learned my own life experiences have all contributed to my view of the world and research activities have allowed new knowledge to change and influence the study and its findings.

On completion of my MRes, I was able to share those findings with services who were keen to use research to influence policy and practice. It also opens opportunities for publication to reach a wider community interested in my subject area. The experience and findings within my MRes has encouraged me to continue and embark on my PhD.

The value of completing this research has enabled me to now share the knowledge and findings to inform not only my current senior lecturer role in higher education, but also engage in discussions with the professional teaching team and wider forums who are responsible or influence the area of practice and expertise.”
