At University of Gloucestershire, our students consistently achieve top honours, winning the national undergraduate award for best film at NAHEMI, four times in the last seven years. Our students’ films have also been recognised at prestigious international film festivals all over the world, including Sundance, SXSW, Encounters, BFI New Talent, and Aesthetica.
The course is highly practical so you’ll always be in production, learning by doing. You’ll create numerous films each year, gaining hands-on experience that prepares you for the industry while building a rich portfolio to showcase your skills and creativity.
The course is deeply rooted in storytelling, dedicated to developing unique voices of tomorrow, with the highest levels of technical ability and visual aesthetics across all aspects of filmmaking.
The teaching team comprises award winning filmmakers and TV professionals, with extensive experience across all key disciplines, including directing, cinematography, sound, editing, and production design. This wealth of expertise ensures that every student film project is developed with the highest level of creative and technical guidance. You’ll experience each role to discover where your passions lie and receive dedicated teaching to refine the specialist skills the industry needs.
Graduates typically go on to work in feature films and high-end TV series, and recently on major movies such as James Bond: No Time To Die, Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Pinocchio, Saltburn, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore and others, as well as HETV shows such as Adolescence, Sex Education and Doctor Who.
The course is ScreenSkills accredited, recognising exceptional standards of industry-relevant training.
You’ll learn in a practical, hands-on style where you’ll be ‘in production’ on at least one film at all times. You’ll explore each aspect of filmmaking and TV production in detail and get the opportunity to specialise and follow more specific pathways as the course goes on.
As well as feedback from lecturers, there are plenty of opportunities to work with mentors who are currently active in the film and television industry. All of our lecturers continue to work professionally, giving you a unique and real-time view of what’s happening in the industry as it happens.
Join intensive weekly workshops to develop your skills in areas such as cinematography, sound mixing/recording, editing, directing, assistant directing, production design, vision mixing and sound post-production. Collaborate with your peers on six short film projects while developing your storytelling voices in the screenwriting module.
You’ll apply skills learned in your first year to create two major films as part of a team – a documentary and a narrative short. You’ll also create your own episodes for the university’s continuing TV series. Second year films have screened at Sundance International Film Festival, won the BFI New Talent Award and premiered at Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival.
You’ll work as if commissioned by an industry commissioning body such as the BFI or Creative England. You’ll collaborate on two more major films or TV projects, selected for production by industry professionals. Learn the entrepreneurial aspects of the business in financing and marketing your films, and yourselves, ready to forge successful careers in the film and TV industries.
