What is a Degree Apprenticeship?
Degree apprenticeships are an alternative to traditional university study, giving you the opportunity to obtain a full undergraduate degree and learn professional skills through a programme combining work and study.
You won’t have to pay any student fees, as these are covered by the Government and your employer using the Apprenticeship Levy scheme.

About the Facilities Management Degree Apprenticeship
This programme has been designed with employers to give you the skills you need to manage spaces, locations, people, time and financial resources.
Facilities managers are critical to many types of organisation. Correct management of facilities is key for any organisation to protect business continuity, run more efficiently and therefore more cost-effectively. At a corporate level, it contributes to the delivery of strategic and operational objectives. On a day-to-day level, effective facilities management provides a safe and efficient working environment.
UoG’s Facilities Manager Degree Apprenticeship has already been delivered for a number of companies, including Womble Bond Dickinson – one of London’s top law firms.
The programme provides the right balance of academic theory and practical skills that are essential for a successful career in management.
Teaching is delivered over three years. Upon completion, you’ll graduate with a BA (Hons) in Facilities Management, as well as an Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM) Level 6 Extended Diploma. You will also meet all the IWFM Member grade requirements for professional recognition.

How does it work?
We’re looking to fill vacancies across England and are currently offering apprenticeships with a range of organisations and companies.
You’ll spend at least 6 working hours each week carrying out ‘off-the-job training’ where you’ll study for your degree and gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required to successfully complete the apprenticeship.

Eligibility & entry requirements
You’ll be employed by a company or organisation who will set their own entry requirements. The most important thing is that you have an interest in managing people and projects, and are excited about a career in facilities management.
You should have grade C/4 or above in maths and English but don’t worry if you haven’t – there will be an opportunity to gain these qualifications during your programme of study. It is a requirement that all apprentices gain these qualifications before their ‘end point assessment’.

Meet the lecturer
Dr Dan Matthews, Lecturer
Dan is one of just a few individuals globally to have researched facilities management at a doctorial level. He has also recently published a book, 8 Principles of Further Education: Progressing Your Career to an Elite Level.
In addition to teaching on the Facilities Management Degree Apprenticeship, Dan is also the South England Regional Manager for a UK-wide facilities management service provider. As such, he is able to bring his very current experience of this highly regulated and ever-changing industry to his teaching.
Dan is passionate about providing opportunities for individuals to expand their knowledge and sees apprenticeships as playing an important role in this.

Academic, Personal and Professional Development
This module gives you the means of developing your knowledge, skills and behaviours for academic, personal and professional development. You’ll gain an understanding of the value of reflective practice, and how reflection can be used as the basis for meaningful personal and professional development.Leadership and Management in an Organisational Context
Being equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to manage and lead in a variety of organisational settings is essential for individual success.This module has been designed to help you develop or sharpen your professional edge and enhance your personal effectiveness.
You’ll evaluate the impact of an organisation’s structure and governance on management and leadership. You will explore theoretical models, as well as management and leadership styles and approaches.
Managing Finance
Financial management skills are essential for all managers. Financial acumen enhances decision making, which in turn supports management of projects, tasks, and functional areas. This module has been designed to enhance your confidence and credibility in financial management, which will translate into improved management skills. You’ll understand how financial systems within organisations operate. You will evaluate the sources of finance for organisations and understand the principles for setting and managing budgets in line with regulatory and organisational guidelines.Business and the Legal System
This module provides an overview of the English legal system, including sources of law, the structure of the court system in England and Wales, and judicial precedent. Key issues are explored in relation to contract formation, obligations and termination; potential liabilities in tort; commercial law considerations such as agency and consumer protection; rights of employees and employers (including issues around termination of the employment contract); protection of intellectual property; and the different legal structures that business organisations can adopt.Application of Managing Projects in Facilities Management
This module introduces you to the fundamental components of facilities management, including how to manage property and fixed assets. You’ll learn how to implement building maintenance plans, monitor and control premises and optimise the use of space. You’ll also learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of a property management plan and its implementation.Live Management Enquiry Project
Without research, business can stagnate. This module begins by highlighting a range of contemporary management challenges and mega trends. You will develop the confidence to conduct a small-scale management enquiry project which could have an impact on organisational practice. Your project fill focus on a topic relevant to your chosen discipline area.Enterprise and Innovation
This module aims to introduce concepts of enterprise and innovation, building a foundation of knowledge and relevant skills, competencies and behaviours.The Global Business Environment
After introducing elementary concepts of the business organisation, this module examines the interaction between the global external environment and business organisations. There is a focus on the political, economic socio-cultural, technical and digital environmental factors at local, national, international, global and industry levels.

Creating and Delivering Operational Plans
The ability to translate organisational objectives into operational plans is an essential management skill. This module uses the context of the operations function in businesses to show how understanding the strategic direction of the organisation is the first stage in the operational planning process. It then focuses on the knowledge and skills required to create and deliver operational plans in an operations function. This includes the need to set key performance indicators, monitor quality and outcomes against the plan, understand the strategic relationship of supply chain management, implement contingency planning and risk assessments, and know how to effectively report on findings.Applied Management Skills
This module explores the types and purposes of stakeholder relationships and the skills required to manage them effectively. You’ll gain an understanding of the nature of contemporary people management in its broader context, including product markets, business strategy, labour markets, organisations, occupational structures, industry sectors and national business systems. You’ll have the opportunity to develop practical people management skills with a focus on effective negotiation, managing conflict, managing organisational change, effective recruitment and selection, and developing and leading people.Employability and Entrepreneurship
In a fast-changing and highly competitive world, all organisations need creative, enterprising and entrepreneurial people. This module aims enhance your employability, so you are able to develop within your own organisation and become an effective leader.Accounting and Finance for Decision Makers
This module builds upon Year 1 content by equipping future business managers from any specialist area with the tools they will need to assist in their ability to make informed management decisions and to communicate effectively with finance specialists. It focuses on techniques for measuring and managing business performance, making effective and informed decisions, and reporting to stakeholders.Delivery, Design, Implementation and Change Management for Facilities Management
This module builds on Year 1 content where the core components of facilities management are introduced. You’ll analyse how to manage, develop and implement delivery plans for properties, assets and services, and how to manage change. Topics include the ethical and sustainable delivery of activities, identifying the operational impact of change, developing plans to mitigate negative impacts, and managing expectations.Communication and Knowledge Management within Facilities Management
This modules explores how facilities managers establish and manage day-to-day relationships with clients and other stakeholders to agreed quality standards.Leadership within Organisations
Leadership theories and followership concepts underpin understanding of effective coaching and mentoring. These are important skills for you to develop in order to enhance the skills, knowledge, talents, and potential of individuals as part of an organisational learning and development strategy.You will consider a range of leadership theories and their application in a range of different contexts. You’ll explore principles and practices of delivering coaching and mentoring, and the impact these techniques can have in the development of a high-performance culture.
Managing Projects to Achieve Results
The ability to manage practical and research projects is a vital skill for all managers. This module focuses on the knowledge and skills required to manage practical and research projects successfully and overcome risks, problems and challenges. You will evaluate the methods and tools for planning tasks and activities, as well as know how to implement and manage project activities, build stakeholder relationships, manage resources and risk, monitor progress and report on outcomes with a view to improving an aspect of future business performance.

Strategic Management of People and Change
In this module you’ll gain an understanding of the rationale for a strategic approach to people management and change in the workplace. You’ll be encouraged to reflect critically on the nature and process of people strategy and change in organisations. This module provides an insight into the essential management and leadership skills required, in addition to how employees may be developed to deliver a people strategy and manage change effectively.Strategic Business and Management
The module examines strategic decision-making through an investigation of external and internal environments, strategic options and implementation. You’ll develop an understanding of business strategy formulation and implementation in terms of theory, practice and policy. It builds upon prior learning in years one and two, providing a holistic perspective of how organisations determine their strategic direction.Strategic Property and Asset Management
This module looks strategically at the management of the FM portfolio. Content includes the develop of property management strategies, how to evaluate, monitor and control premises, fabric and building services, and the identification of value and the creation opportunities.Procurement and Contract Management
The module examines two distinct areas of facilities management – procurement of FM-related goods and services, and how to manage FM supplier and/or contract performance. The module builds on earlier studies to critically assess the key drivers of efficiency and value for money in the supply chain. This includes exploring the effectiveness of procurement arrangements, the evaluation of supplier proposals and the agreement of contracts. The module also includes a critical review how to monitor contracts and manage supplier performance.End Point Assessment
You must complete an end point assessment (EPA) as part of the apprenticeship. The EPA is an independent assessment designed to test that you are competent in your occupation as a Manager by assessing the knowledge, skills and behaviour (KSB) outcomes detailed in the approved Apprenticeship Standard.For this degree apprenticeship, the EPA consists of three components:
- a work-based project;
- a presentation with discussion;
- a professional discussion based on the apprentices’ portfolio.
The EPA takes place once all the other modules have been completed.

Gloucestershire Business School
You’ll learn at UoG’s £18 million, state-of-the-art Gloucestershire Business School on Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester.
This centre for business opened in 2018 and facilities include a business incubation centre, a Thomson Reuters trading room, a moot court room, board rooms, a consumer behaviour lab, and equipment on par with that of a global headquarters.
The space also encompasses Gloucestershire’s flagship Growth Hub. The Growth Hub offers fully funded business support for every growing Gloucestershire business. Having helped more than 10,000 businesses since 2014, the Growth Hub’s team of experts are on-hand to help Gloucestershire business grow through a blend of one-to-one expert support, training and events.
How you’ll be supported
You’ll have a personal tutor throughout your apprenticeship, as well as a learner coach who conducts reviews and supports you towards successful completion.
You are also supported by module tutors and UoG’s Student Centre staff, who are contactable by telephone, in person and online.
