Outreach and widening participation

Summer residentials

Our summer residentials run every year in July for students in Year 10, 12 or equivalent.

Applications for the 2026 Summer Residentials have now closed.

Students who completed and submitted their application before the deadline will be contacted no later than Sunday 17 May with the outcome of their application. If you have applied but are no longer interested or are unable to attend, please get in touch as soon as possible by emailing [email protected].

Teachers and advisers can also contact the Outreach team via [email protected] with any queries.

What happens on a Summer Residential?

Curious about what university life is really like? Our Summer residentials give you the chance to explore campus life and discover different subject areas. You’ll get to meet other students from across the country, live in halls of residence, try interactive subject tasters led by our lecturers in industry-standard facilities, speak to current students, and find out more about university life.

A travel bursary of up to £50 is available to help with the cost of transport to and from the University.

New for 2026: Year 12 Residential Project Teams

For the first time, everyone who takes part in the Year 12 Residential will be part of a project team that collaborates with academic staff to create something exciting for your personal statement:

In The Credits – Is that Hollywood calling? Follow the movie making journey from page to screen as you create and market your own short film.

Business SOS – Ready for a rebrand? The fate of a local business is in your hands, and it is your responsibility to draw up a professional recovery plan.

Rescue to Recovery – Are you good in a crisis? Chart a patient’s journey from rescue to recovery and create a major incident response plan that could save hundreds of lives.

Kit list

As part of the summer residentials, students will be provided with meals on each day of the residential and accommodation (individual rooms with their own bathroom).

Below is a list of items that we ask each student to bring with them:

To note: It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that their rooms are locked during times of absence. Any money or personal items that are brought to the summer school are at the owner’s risk entirely and the University will not be held responsible for any incidents of loss, theft, or damage to personal items.
